  17. <p>    If a proposal before the Berkeley city council becomes law,
  18. hoteliers will be offering more than a bed, bath and Gideon
  19. Bible. Leland Traiman, a registered nurse who treats AIDS
  20. patients, has suggested that the city help combat the spread of
  21. the disease by requiring hotels and motels to equip each guest
  22. room with safe-sex information kits, including condoms. The kits
  23. would also be distributed at some local massage parlors and
  24. saunas. "There could be a sign with each kit saying, THE BIBLE
  25. MAY SAVE YOUR SOUL, BUT THIS WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE," says Traiman.
  26. Some innkeepers fear that guests might find the kits offensive.
  27. Elie Cukierman, owner of the venerable Shattuck Hotel, suggests
  28. an alternative: a sign in each room stating that condoms are
  29. available free, on request.
